Clifton Forge Workshop

I went to a Plein-Air Painters Workshop this weekend at Clifton Forge School of the Arts, Charlie Hunter was giving it. There were ten of us and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. He taught us to paint with a very limited palette and below are his painting he did this weekend.

The setting was the town of Clifton Forge and we walked all around and set up our easels  . . . the first day I didn't really "get it" with the limited palette and I didn't have the correct surfaces to paint on.

Italy painting

This is a VERY belated gift to a distant cousin in Italy . . . being hand-delivered by my step-brother to his daughter who is over in Bologna, Italy for the semester . . . having a grand time! Just thought I would share . . . 8" x 8" oil on board.

Miller School Barn

I know this is not the best photo but I will try to replace it when I can . . . this was from last weekend on Sunday at Miller School when it started out hazy and cool but turned 89 degrees and sunny. So I didn't change the sky and back mountains because as a plein-air painter you paint what you have. Really enjoyed the opening tonight, thanks to Sharon, Annie and the chef's . . . and everyone who came out!

Peach Bloom

This was painted earlier this week with Eileen, now the storm has come and taken most of the bloom off but hopefully the fruit has set . . . . this is SO MUCH earlier than normal, what a Spring we are having! 12" x 12" oil on canvas, framed  $175. SOLD

Beaver Creek Reservoir

The other day in the late afternoon I went out to paint over at the reservoir because it was sooo nice out! I plan to go back to do larger ones around the reservoir. 6" x 12" oil on MDF board, framed $125. SOLD

King Family Vineyard

Here is a painting for a wedding present to their daughter and son-in-law from their wedding at the King Family Vineyard. I started it on site and finished it in the studio, I live right down the road from here so I know it well. 16" x 40" oil on canvas, framed. Thanks Lee and Joe!

The Rotunda

Last week Polly, Eileen and I went up on the garage roof near the corner, to paint a "Charlottesville in 2 Dimensions" painting for a small show at McGuffey Art Center. It will be showing for the month of March through Art In Place http://www.artinplace.org/  and the opening reception is March 2, from 5:30 to 7:30. I will be away that week . . . we had fun painting but it was very windy so we had to really clamp down! 20" x 20" oil on canvas, framed, $400.  SOLD  thanks Mary and Mike!

Valley Floor

On Friday Elizabeth Sauder ( http://www.elizabethsauder.com/ ) came up from Lexington and we met on the Parkway. We had fun with a picnic too . . . and I painted this larger painting!

Mountain Study II

Riverdale Farm I

(I have been corrected, this is Riverdale Farm, which is right next door to Midway Farm, thanks Page!) . . . We painted outside today b/c it was 68 degrees! Eileen, Polly and I found this place on Garth Road that is very dramatic and was fun to paint . . . I did two and will show the other one tomorrow. 11" x 14" oil on canvas, framed $225  SOLD

The Valley

This is up on the ridge above Rockfish Valley that I started in the early fall with the farms down below. There are so many views in this area and places to paint, I never seam to run out of them! 12" x 48" oil on canvas, framed. $650 SOLD

Chile's Peach Orchard, Fall

This was a ton of fun to paint this fall and finish up recently from life. I went back up on the hill several times to this location which is very close to my home. The challenge was to keep it in the fall colors after the leaves fell but since I started it in the fall, and had made several color studies then, it was easier to do. This was a commission for our neighbors and friends what live just beyond the view on the righthand side of this painting. 22" x 54" oil on canvas framed. SOLD . . . Thanks Minda and Buzz!

Evening Coming

Happy New Year to all! I have taken a break as I usually do for the month of December and had a wonderful time with my family and friends through the holidays. Now back to work . . . I have four large commissions to do in the next two months plus some travel plans with my husband! I do hope to post a few smaller paintings along the way as I often start the day with some "warm up" paintings.
     This year I plan on having fewer shows and travel & paint more out of the area. Will post my 2012 schedule soon. Today I am about to go up on the hillside above the peach orchard to work on one of the commissions . . . it is near 60 degrees and I am thrilled! The painting above is NFS and lives in my studio, 16" x 20" oil on canvas.

Two Barns, White Hall

I re-worked this painting and am very happy with it now. I want to paint these two barns from the other side as well but need to find a safe place to park on this country road. 16" x 16" oil on canvas, SOLD

Blue Ridge Parkway III

This was painted Thanksgiving weekend and as you see below I was in a tank-top! It was 70 degrees and we were thrilled to be up on the Parkway and painting. Below is Barbara and Polly painting . . . this is 12" by 52" oil on canvas, framed $700  SOLD!

Thanksgiving Kale

How nice to be able to paint the day after Thanksgiving! . . . here is my husband's garden, the kale and bok choy we ate the day before! It was in 70 degrees that day! 8" x 10" oil on board, framed $145.

Nelson Farm II

This painting had been HIDING in someones storage space and is now showing at Hot Cakes until December 4th. I am delighted to have it back, just lost track of it . . . I LOVE this view in Nelson County, it represents everything that the county has, small farms & big mountains!  36" x 44"  oil on canvas, framed . . $1,600

Fall at Chile's Peach Orchard

It was so warm and beautiful this past Monday that I got out and painted this in the afternoon. I LOVE this red barn and want to paint it this winter too . . . . if I am brave enough to get out there! 16" x 20" oil on canvas framed, $350.

Jone's Barn

Lexington Hillside 1

Here is one of the two other paintings I did with Elizabeth last week West of Lexington. The trees where wonderful and the day was warm, such fun!  8" x 10" oil on canvas, framed $145.

Kerrs Creek, Lexington

I went to Lextington last week and painted with a new painting friend, Elizabeth Sauder. She had permission to paint on a farm a few miles west of Lexington. I will post two other small paintings I did that day. This one was looking down on a complicated view but I LOVED the rhythm of the hillside. 12" x 12" oil on canvas, framed $200. SOLD

Neighbor's Pond

On Wednesday, Polly, Barbara and I got out to this little pond down the road from me and painted for a few hours. We all agreed to come back again soon. 11" x 14" oil on treated paper, framed SOLD

Third Cutting

 Yesterday Polly, Eileen and I went out to paint right across from my home. This is my neighbor's farm which is on the market to be sold. Blue Ridge Panaramic

Morning sky of the Blue Ridge Parkway as a slice of the horizon. What a lovely area that we live in . . . . and I get to paint. Mirador Farm III

A commission for Frank for his birthday, Happy Birthday Frank! I LOVE painting this scene from the road of route 692 . . . but next time I will try another spot. Rockfish Gap

Afton Mountain

What a gorgeous day yesterday to paint! I went up to look out at Afton mountain from where route 691 and 692 meet at Plank Rd. I had been eying this spot for a while, just a pull-off on the road. 20" x 20" oil on canvas, framed $ 385. SOLD thanks Beth!

Evening Bales

Here is a painting I repainted the other day and I like it much better now that it has more of an evening feel to it. This is from one of our local farmers in Crozet. I often have to run out to paint the bales because they often move them the next day. 24" x 30" oil on canvas framed, $600.  SOLD

Henley's Barn

Henley's barn on route 811 is right north of Crozet and Henley's have a wonderful apple orchard that this barn is across from. I believe they have horses at this barn even though I didn't see them there.

Molly's View

This is a commission for Molly and her family near Batesville, VA, not far from our home. I had invited three painting friends to come paint also and there where young children running around that made it all more fun. I need to tweak this a bit but close to being done. 30" x 40" oil on canvas. Thanks Molly!

Miller School Barn

Miller School Hillside

This is from the Paint-Out this past weekend up at Miller School here in Crozet. Several friends and I (below is Nancy, Eileen and Barbara in the back).  The painting is a bit more detailed than what I am used to.
