Red Barn, Lexington

Eileen and I painted at Possum Hollow in Lexington on Saturday morning with the wind blowing steadily. This is a simple painting of the barn in the distance but loved the basic colors against each other. I did a small one as well  . . . both at C-ville Arts    16" x 20" oil on canvas, framed $325. Garden Shed

Nelson Gallery Paint-Out

Eileen and I went to Lexington this weekend to do a two day Paint-Out at the Nelson Gallery with about 25 local painters. We had great fun and got to know several of the nice folks running the gallery and the painters . . . .  Above is one of Eileen's paintings of the Maury River and mine of Stonewall Jackson's Garden, with photo of the garden next to his house.

Blue Ridge Parkway III

I went up twice to paint at one of my favorite spots on the parkway and Polly came up with me the second time when I needed to go back. This is not at an official overlook but between two. I LOVE to paint from this spot in every season and have done all but the winter, perhaps this year I will bundle up and try. Snowy Mountain III

We spent most of the day here on Hardscrabble Rd, off Laura Fork Rd in Bluegrass Valley. It was overcast most of the day and so enjoyed painting a large one that day. Snowy Mountain is well known in the area. 16" x 40" oil on canvas framed, SOLD thanks Sandy!

Fog Lifting

This was the first of the paintings on Saturday. We had scoped out this spot the day before (but did this small painting first before my Snowy Mountain one, which is coming next). We were so intrigued with the fog coming off the mountains, amazing to try to catch it! 8" x 8" oil on MDF board, framed, $95.  SOLD

New Hampden Mill

We painted right before our rum smoothies :-) and dinner, just in the neighborhood of New Hampden near Bluegrass. We were thrilled because the sun came out for the late afternoon. I don't know how long ago this mill was working but it is in very good shape and fun to paint! 8" x 8" oil on MDF board framed, $110  SOLD  (I did change this a bit before I sold it and didn't get a photo to replace this one, opps!)

Three Barns II

Here is the third painting from the same spot . . . . the sky was just clearing up a bit. This is looking West from High Town, but I didn't put in the house. It was these three buildings that caught my eye. It is the artist's choice to leave something out if the composition is better without it. 11' x 14" oil on canvas, framed, $195. SOLD thanks Sam!

High Town II

This is the second painting from under the gas-station overhang where Eileen and I parked ourselves while it was raining. This is looking south and the clouds had just lifted from the distant mountains, but briefly. 12" x 12" oil on canvas, framed, $175  SOLD

Leaning Shed

This is the first of several that I will post from this past weekend in the Highland County Paint Out. A big thanks to Liz and Suse that run the show there . . . three of us went and stayed at Patti's cottage and had fun despite the weather being very grey and rainy for half the time. Eileen and I found shelter under an old abandon gas station in High Town. This is from there looking north . . . Mountain Pines

Here is a simple study from going out in my back county not far from my house off the trail up by the Skyline Parkway. The colors are really starting to change. 8" x 8" framed, $110.
Even though they are calling for rainy weather all weekend, Barbara, Eileen and I are going to the Highland County Paint-Out today and hope to find some protected spots to paint. Maybe some kind farmer who has a barn we can stand in and be dry! Wish us luck . . . will post when we get back! SOLD

Appalachian Trail

Our home is right below the Appalachian Trail and my husband and I hike the part near our house sometimes. This is from a photo of the area north of us that I did one rainy day in my studio. 16" x 24" oil on canvas framed, $300  SOLD

Mountain & Bales

This was painted for the Crozet Craft Show coming up in three weeks from a photo last year that I started but just got back to finish. There are so many great mountain views all around where we live, so lucky! Funny thing, I added an extra bale but forgot to photograph it!

Fall Coming!

A simple painting of the colors behind my house . . . . went painting with Polly today up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, will show that soon! I have a few others to post also. Railroad Bridge

I painted this on Monday with Eileen and Polly but we were spread out a bit and not in sight of each other at the new parkway that is not open yet. They have a wonderful bike / jogging lane that runs along side the road. I painted this railroad tunnel from a new walking bridge. Two trains went by above where you see the skylight. Still needs a bit of tweaking! 16" x 20" oil on canvas, framed, $325.

Highland Hillside III

This represents Highland County at it's best, with the upper meadows for the sheep and the lower ones for farming. Four of us are going there next weekend for a Fall Paint-Out, should be fun! 10" x 12" oil on MDF board, framed, $150. SOLD

David's Garden

My husband's garden this summer with the tall garlic stalks in the back and the apple tree. We are infested with the stink bugs right now, they love our peppers and tomatoes! 12" x 12" oil on masonite, $175.

Jandy's Church, Michigan

(I apologize for the delayed entry, life has been VERY busy!) . . .
This really isn't Jandy's church, they just call it that . . . my cousin and her husband bought the land around this church and live across the street from it. They are planning to raise yaks there, once they put up VERY sturdy fencing! 8-1/2" x 10" NFS.

Leland Boathouse

This is my favorite painting from the Michigan trip with my cousins!
(I am skipping a day because I don't have the photos ready from the opening night of the Paint-Out. Will add soon.) Ceci and I had fun going to an outdoor art show in Suttons Bay and then wondered over to the town of Leland. We found this spot at the boathouse near the Leland Art building and set up to paint.  9" x 11" oil on mounted paper, framed, $185.

Simple Sunset

This was painted the evening after the boathouse painting . . . we packed up some dinner, beer and our paints and set up as the sky was starting to show off it's colors. It is at the Good Harbor Beach, love that name! 8" x 10" oil on mounted paper, $150.

Yacht Club Boathouse

We have just gotten back from a ten day trip to California, took the red-eye home! I was not able to paint out there, nor post from my new iPod, but hope to work that out next time I go away.
This painting is from the Glen Arbor trip earlier this month. Unfortunately I don't have the original photo of the location or the painting Ceci did there, but hope to add it later. 8" x 10" oil on mounted paper, framed, $150.

Pierce Stocking National Park

Pierce Stocking is a fabulous park, this is at the "Dune Overlook" sites. We came back here to paint for the "Paint-Out" on Saturday. Ceci and I painted together on this lovely Thursday. Then that afternoon I started the church painting which I will show later, it is drying and being sent.
That evening Brad's mother Joanne, took us out on her boat for a dinner and sunset. Thank you Joanne!

The Old Silo

Again, I am showing it framed . . . this was the first painting on the second day in Leelandau County, Michigan. Ceci and I were so excited to come around the bend and see this magnificent structure!

Bosch Rd, Michigan

I am showing this painting with the frame so you see how it is finished. This is the first painting Ceci and I did, it is one of many historic farms that are preserved in the area. I wanted to paint at ALL of them, but we ran out of time . . . plus, we had to paint the LAKES! SOLD

 My cousin Ceci from Steamboat Springs, CO who flew into Traverse City at the same time as I did, and we rented a car and drove a total of 464 miles in eight days!

Time in Michigan

My fabulous time with my cousins, Ceci and Jandy, and Jandy's family near Glen Harbor, Michigan. Here at their Great Lakes Ranch, where they raise Alpacas in a beautiful setting, I got to enjoy 7 days of painting with Ceci. I promise to post the paintings next! Hollyhocks

Squeezing in one more painting before my trip . . . here are the lovely hollyhocks in front of one of the hoop-houses at Harvest Moon Flower Farm in Indiana. www.harvestmoonflowerfarm.com This was painted in June when we went to visit our son and Anna whose family own this wonderful farm. Stuarts Draft, VA

I painted this about a month ago on the OTHER side of the Blue Ridge mountains, called Shenandoah Valley, looking east. This was a farm that had been recently plowed, with wonderful barns.

Madison County

Just wanted to share this painting that SOLD last week in Richmond through a gallery there . . . thanks BJ! It was painted in 2009 and is large, 46" x 56" oil on canvas. Great memories painting it!

James River

 

Here is what I painted yesterday when I went with my friend Joyce to Diane and Joe's property on the James River. What a great river to paint . . . there was a bald eagle in the tree near his nest, the sound of the rushing water and cold beer! I want to go back!  16" x 20" oil on canvas, framed, $325

Here is the other painting I did with Eileen last week above the orchard . . . great views and a nice breeze up there. We almost stepped in some VERY fresh bear dung! Nelson County Farm III

Eileen and I got out the other morning to paint in Nelson County and painted a few small ones. We were high enough up to get some distance on the mountains.  8" x 8" oil on DMF board framed SOLD

The Coral

This painting was done a few years ago and was living in a near by restaurant. It was painted up in Maryland and I was intrigued by the path that the horses created as they left the coral. They came to visit me and watch me paint! 24" x 48" oil on canvas, framed, $900. SOLD

Flower Farm II

My second painting from Harvest Moon Flower Farm. They explained that they had cut so many flowers in the last week for a wedding and market, they apologized for not having more color! 6" x 12" NFS.

The Creek
