Back Pond, Day 7 of Challenge

Small impression of our neighbor's back pond when the sun was hitting it. Taking my husband to the airport today, hence a small painting! 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" framed $110.

White Hall Hillside, Day 6 of Challenge

White Hall Hillside is what I will call this, it was great to get outside today to paint! It was in the low 30's but I was out of the wind and in the sun, so it was pleasant. It is funny because I wear my son's old snow pants to keep warm, it works great! This painting needs a bit more work but generally happy with it. 8" x 24" oil on canvas framed, $250  SOLD

Franklin Cliffs, Skyline Drive

A possible commission for someone, I started this in September and since it was cold out today, I got to finish it up inside. Tomorrow will be much warmer and I will go out to paint!

McCormick Farm, Day 3 of Challenge

Finished up this painting that I started a few weeks ago with my friends at McCormick Farm in Raphine, VA. It was a wonderful warm day and five of us came out to paint.

Barns and Farm in Stuarts Draft

Painted this a few weeks ago over in Stuarts Draft just outside of Waynesboro, VA. I like trying to understand the relationship of all the building and their uses, the main house was just to the left of this painting, maybe another time I will go back to paint that.

Blue Ridge Parkway, November

Blue Ridge Parkway, Fall View

I got to go paint up at my favorite spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway before all the leaves dropped. Will have this painting at my new show @ Hot Cakes in Charlottesville, which hangs November 29 and goes through January 9. I am busy getting ready for the show!

Loft Mountain Amphitheater View

Painting up on Loft Mountain amphitheater at the campgrounds, the last Friday night they were open, we camped out and I got to paint this view. The next day had a heavy cloud overcast, so I was glad to be up there to catch the colors. That is Massanutten mountain range in the way distance. We even saw a young bobcat!  16" x 40" oil on canvas, framed $800  SOLD

Shenandoah National Park

Mitchell Bay, San Juan Islands

Painted this from the little cottage we stay in on Mitchell Bay, evening light when we got back early enough. 10" x 13" oil on canvas, framed  $245.
Here is how I set up if I don't have a table or want to be on the ground, since I didn't have a standing easel.

East Sound House, Orcas Island, WA

East Sound, the main town on Orcas Island, painted this house by the water, looking back to the town. Fun place to paint . . . . just set up on the hillside while David hiked, sitting in the warm sun after a rain that morning. I took the least amount of supplies and am very happy how it all worked out (will show a photo of what I took.) 9" x 9" oil on treated paper, framed $150

Cattle Point, San Juan Islands

Also showing the frame, these are new to me and not my usual frames! Bear with me . . . this is at Cattle Point, part of the American Camp National Historic Park. The Americans held camp on the southern edge of the San Juan Islands. The question was if the islands were to be part of Canada or America, it was decided in 1872 that they went with America.  9" x 9" oil on treated paper, $150

Young Hill View, San Juan Islands

Decided to show this in the frame that I have for it . . . This was painted on top of Young Hill part of the English Camp National Historic Park on San Juan Island. David hiked while I sat on the hill and painted. The island in the distance is part of Canada, Victoria is to the far left-hand side. 9" x 9" oil on treated paper, $150, framed.

Our Cottage, San Juan Island

A small painting of our little cottage we stayed in for six nights while on San Juan Island, our host was a couple who also rent out a B & B called the Longhouse, a site where the Salish Indians lived.
I painted on treated paper which made traveling easy, NFS.

San Juan Islands, Washington

My husband and I had a fabulous trip to the San Juan Islands and then south of San Francisco to visit family. We had a great time and will post about a dozen paintings that I did throughout my trip. This is from the first cottage we stayed in which is at the end of Mitchell Bay on San Juan. This is one of the views from our cottage. Haven't figured out how to frame some of these yet, 7" x 14" oil on treated paper, $250

C-ville Arts

First Fridays: September 4
C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery 118 E. Main St., Downtown Mall. “Four Seasons,” featuring plein air oil paintings by Meg West. 6-8pm.

En plein air, a French expression meaning open air, is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Artist Meg West prefers the form, the environmental immersion and challenge that comes with it. Living in Virginia, she says she benefits from being able to “breathe, see and experience the view large all around,” and see through eyes that want to recreate and express a sense of beauty. West maintains that it is the act of painting that is important, and says she enjoys the feeling of being connected to her environment and herself as well as her creation.

 First Fridays is a monthly art event featuring exhibit openings at many Downtown art galleries and additional exhibition venues. Several spaces offer receptions. Listings are compiled in collaboration with Piedmont Council for the Arts.
